Hobbs and Shaw 2: Who will return for Hobbs & Shaw 2?

Jeremy Caroll

There are few certainties in the world of entropy, but there are at least two solid facts that can be confirmed: Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s muscles continue to grow, and Jason Statham’s beard stubble becomes coarser and more manly with each punch to the face. Also confirmed: Hobbs & Shaw, their successful spin-off in the Fast & Furious franchise, will get a sequel, as The Rock explained in an Instagram Q&A, via Screen Rant.

Chris Morgan, a longtime Fast & Furious writer, will return for the screenplay, but details are scarce for the time being. According to Johnson, everyone involved in the project is just getting started. “Right now, we just have to figure out the creative and the direction we’re going to take,” he says. That means the film is still in its early stages of development.

However, there are several possible paths it could take, especially since the first Hobbs & Shaw left us with a few hints that set up a sequel. So buckle up, because here’s everything we’ve learned so far about the possible direction of Hobbs & Shaw 2.

When will Hobbs & Shaw 2 be released in theatres?

Unfortunately, no release date has been set, despite the fact that the upcoming sequel has been in the works for quite some time, and nothing has been confirmed as of yet.

Things were pushed back due to the pandemic, which had a significant impact on the production of the upcoming sequel.

“Everyone involved with the project is getting started,” says actor Dwayne Johnson. Just need to figure out the creative and the direction we’re going in right now.”

However, it is expected that the film will be released by 2022 at the very latest, though filming has yet to begin.

How long before we see more Hobbs and Shaw?

For quite some time, there has been talking of a sequel, but full confirmation was not given until recently. Knowing when it will be released, however, is a difficult task in the age of COVID-19. In terms of scheduling, The Rock is also extremely busy: he is currently preparing to enter the DC universe as Black Adam, and he will also appear in another Jumanji film. As a result, many aspects of Hobbs & Shaw will undoubtedly have to work around the superstar’s schedule.

However, it would be a wise decision to alternate the release dates of F&F installments and H&S sequels each year. With the release date of Fast & Furious 9 set for 2021, we may not see Statham and The Rock again until 2022.

Who will return for Hobbs & Shaw 2?

There may be jetpacks and superhuman acrobatics, as well as hyper-intelligent baddies raining vehicles down on city streets, but don’t forget the franchise’s central theme. That’s correct: family. It’s like having Thanksgiving dinner in the park while your drunk uncle drives around the table in a red 1982 Camaro doing donuts.

The sequel would not be possible without the involvement of both The Rock and Jason Statham, so you can count them in. Despite the fact that no official announcements have been made, the core members have all expressed a desire to return, including Vanessa Kirby — and even Idris Elba, who told Digital Spy he’d like to see his character’s origin story depicted. Meanwhile, while no official word has been released, we can expect Ryan Reynolds and Kevin Hart to make surprise appearances, as the two had cameos in the first Hobbs & Shaw that were somehow kept under wraps until the film’s release.

What is Hobbs & Shaw 2’s Plot?

What happens next in the story? There’s some speculation that the writers will send Hobbs and Shaw into a more sci-fi realm, and given how Idris Elba’s character developed in the last one, this could very well be a possibility, especially since it’d be a smart way to differentiate from the main series. That being said, any plot developments in Hobbs & Shaw 2 are currently speculative.

The first film’s revelation of a shadowy figure pulling the strings of Eteon, now known simply as “the Director,” is perhaps the most obvious clue about the sequel’s direction, though it’s unclear if this is a thread for the Fast & Furious franchise as a whole or just the Hobbs & Shaw movies in particular.

Screenwriter Chris Morgan has mostly remained silent on the subject, but in an interview with Screen Rant about Eteon’s future, he stated: “This specifically refers to the ability to tell a story in a cinematic universe where not everything must be crammed into one story, one thing. That is a continuous reveal. I’d tell the audience to… just hang on.”

Meanwhile, Johnson continues to reveal tidbits of information. The action star revealed some details in an Instagram video: “And now we have a few more surprises and great characters to create in this next installment. Not characters Hobbs can simply kick the s*** out of because that’s boring, but characters I believe you’ll fall in love with.”

We’ve learned to trust the process after so many successful runs with the gang. Because filming on the project has yet to begin, there is no trailer, but stay tuned for updates in the near future.
