Ratcliffe, who was born in Failsworth, Lancashire (Greater Manchester) on October 18, 1952, attended the University of Birmingham and grew up in East Yorkshire.
Ratcliffe began his career as a chemical engineer at the oil business Esso. Later, he obtained a position with the American private equity firm Advent International.
At age 40, he co-founded the company INSPEC before establishing Ineos in Hampshire and purchasing out his partners. In 2010, Ratcliffe relocated the Ineos headquarters from Hampshire to Rolle, Switzerland.
