The convoy enters the “Black Pit,” a Mid-Atlantic chasm where they will be out of reach of protective air cover. While they are still three days away from resuming air cover, the convoy flagship’s high-frequency direction finding results in the interception of multiple German messages, suggesting the proximity of U-boats. Greyhound Movie‘s radar operator spots a surfaced submarine approaching the convoy. Greyhound maneuvers away from the convoy in order to intercept it and brings the U-boat within shooting range, but the rough waves enable the U-boat to dive before Greyhound Movie can obtain a view. After re-establishing sonar contact, the submarine attempts to pass beneath Greyhound, but Krause positions his ship above the U-boat and fires a full pattern of depth charges, resulting in his first death.

The crew’s joy is short-lived, as they soon get reports of distress rockets in the convoy’s rear. Another U-boat targeted a Greek commercial ship, which was rapidly sinking. Krause sends Greyhound to help, dodging torpedoes launched at his ship with deft maneuvering.

Further On The Plot

The surviving Greek sailors are rescued, and Greyhound Movie returns to the convoy just as the bridge receives multiple messages from the other escorts: a wolfpack of six U-boats is staying just out of firing range of the convoy; Krause suspects they are waiting for nightfall when the escorts will be obscured by darkness. The attack begins that evening with the torpedoing and sinking of five cargo ships.

One U-boat sinks an oil tanker and flees Greyhound Movie by employing an underwater decoy, duping the crew into spending the majority of their remaining depth charges. Krause chooses to rescue people from the flaming oil tanker rather than initially assisting the other ships, which he later regrets.
