Cory Ephram Joseph (born August 20, 1991) is a Canadian professional basketball player for the Detroit Pistons of the National Basketball Association (NBA) (NBA). He plays the point guard position and is also the captain of the Canadian national team.

Early life and family

Connie and David Joseph, who were both born in Trinidad and Tobago, had four hildren, the youngest of them was Joseph, who was born in Toronto, Ontario.  When his parents met at Mount Royal College as student players for their respective men’s and women’s basketball teams, he was born into a basketball family. In high school, he was coached by his father, who went on to win a CCAA national title with the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology. His mother served as a coach and referee at a variety of levels. In addition to his two elder sisters, Chantal and Danielle, Joseph has an older brother, Devoe, who played collegiate football for the University of Minnesota and Oregon and presently plays professionally in Europe.

Ashton Khan, another cousin of Joseph’s, is a British Basketball League professional basketball player.

Kelly Olynyk, a future NBA player, and Joseph were both members of the Scarborough Blues club team in the late 1990s and early 2000s, which had a winning record. Stephen Curry guided his team to a 5–0 loss against Toronto, their only other setback.

During the All-Canada Classic in 2008, he and Devoe were both selected to play with some of the best secondary school athletes in Canada at the time.

At the age of 16, Joseph transferred to Findlay Prep in Henderson, Nevada, with his best friend and fellow AAU member, Tristan Thompson. Findlay Prep defeated Oak Hill Academy, 74–66, in the ESPN RISE National High School Invitational final in 2009, which was held in the same area as Thompson and Avery Bradley.

An All-Tournament team was formed for ESPN RISE. The fourth annual Boost Mobile Elite 24 basketball game was held at Rucker Park in Harlem, New York City, in August 2009. Joseph was selected to play. Despite their enlistment in the military, the game includes the top 24 high school b-ball players in the United States.

College Career

During his rookie season, Joseph played in all 36 games and led the team in scoring four times and in rebounding two times, respectively. Against North Carolina, Joseph scored a season-high 21 points, including the game-winning jumper, on December 18, 2010. The Longhorns were the West Regional Division’s fourth seed going into the 2011 NCAA March Madness. Derrick Williams’ game-winning shot helped Texas lose to fifth-seeded Arizona in the third round. As a freshman, Joseph was chosen to the Big 12 All-Freshman team and declared for the NBA draught.

Professional Career

The San Antonio Spurs selected Joseph as the 29th overall pick in the 2011 NBA draught on June 23, 2011. As a fellow Canadian and a Longhorn, the Cleveland Cavaliers selected Canadian-born Thompson fourth overall in the NBA draught, making him the highest-ever selection of a Canadian-born player. Andrew Wiggins was drafted first overall in the 2014 NBA Draft, whereas Anthony Bennett was drafted first overall in 2013. Two Canadians were taken in the first round of the same NBA draught before, with Leo Rautins and Stewart Granger going 17th and 25th in the first round in 1983. It was also the first time in NBA history that three Texas Longhorns were selected in the first round, with Jordan Hamilton going 26th overall to the Dallas Mavericks.

During the 2012–13 season, he was also allocated to the Toros. For the 2013 NBA D-League All-Star Game, Joseph was selected as a Prospects All-Star team member. However, he was replaced by Justin Dentmon because of an injury.

When Tony Parker went down with an injury in late February 2013, Joseph stepped in as the team’s starting point guard. Joseph averaged 8.8 points and 2.6 assists in his first five starts while shooting 58.6 percent from the floor. Despite helping the Spurs make it to the NBA Finals, San Antonio lost the series against Miami Heat in seven games.

After the San Antonio Spurs beat the Miami Heat 4-1 in the 2014 NBA Finals on June 15, 2014, Joseph was crowned NBA champion for the first time.

As a restricted free agent, the Spurs had a qualifying offer out to Joseph on June 30, but on July 5, they withdrew it.
