The Old Man Season 2: Release Date, Cast and All You Need to Know

Oren Morrison

The Old Man was not just one of the most well-liked new shows of 2022, but also one of the greatest. With one of the largest and greatest premieres of that year, the FX revenge action-thriller broke records for Hulu and earned multiple Emmy nods, including one for Jeff Bridges, the lead actor.

When Does the Old Man Season 2 Come Out?

The Old Man is returning at last, following strikes by writers and actors that caused delays! Season 2 of FX is set to debut on Thursday, September 12. The eight-episode season will begin with the premiere of the first two episodes back-to-back, with a new episode every week after that. Hulu will stream every episode the following day.

Over two years have passed since the end of the first season, when the September debut date is set. Just after the premiere of the third episode of Season 1, on June 27, 2022, FX placed an order for a second season of The Old Man.

What Can We Expect From the Old Man Season 2?

Dan Chase and Harold Harper are sent on a mission to rescue Angela/Emily (Alia Shawkat), who was abducted by terrorist Faraz Hamzad, in Season 2, which picks up right after Season 1. That means, in a dramatic twist of Grumpy Old Men meets Planes, Trains, and Automobiles, diving deep into Afghanistan to get her, right into the jaws of the enemy. Harper finds it more difficult, but Chase, who did this when he was younger, finds it easier.

Co-creator and executive producer Jonathan E. Steinberg told TV Guide at the Television Critics Association press tour in July that making Harold Harper take on a more active role than he was used to is challenging for both him and Chase. He mentioned that it’s tough for them to act like they’re still young and to get back into the groove of their job after being away from it.

However, it’s particularly hard for Harold since he’s doing his colleague’s job 30 years later. Steinberg expressed that finally having the chance to bring Harper and Chase together and letting them relax for a moment was thrilling, especially since the end of Season 1, when they finally shared screen time, was so intense. He found it exciting to give them a story where they could simply exist for a while.

The excitement of witnessing Chase and Harper interact on screen more frequently than in Season 1 is undoubtedly a highlight of the show, but Emily’s perspective will be heavily featured, particularly since fans discovered during the end of Season 1 that Emily is Hamzad’s biological daughter.

“I believe this season is fundamentally centered on [Emily] as she navigates an intense identity crisis, one that is more tangible than any I’ve previously written,” Steinberg explained. “She is now becoming aware that she has not just two, but three identities to reconcile. This third identity is new and completely unfamiliar, touching parts of her life that she can’t articulate. Observing her grapple with this, figuring out her emotions towards these three father figures, understanding herself, and determining where she belongs, is profoundly traumatic, violent, and confusing.”

Furthermore, you can wager that Angela/Emily will soon discover who her biological father is. Generally speaking, we never want a character to lag too much behind the viewer. So that’s coming really soon for her,” Steinberg said following the end of Season 1 to Deadline.

What is Cast for Season 2 of the Old Man?

The Old Man Season 2 Cast

Naturally, Jeff Bridges and John Lithgow will return, and most of the core cast will also return considering how The Old Man Season 1 concluded—many stories are still being told. But it’s quite unlikely that those who didn’t make it out of the season finale unscathed—Agent Raymond Waters, played by E.J. Bonilla, for example—will be back for Season 2.

You don’t need to worry about Zoe not appearing in Season 2. Executive producer Dan Shotz said that even though Chase left her to pursue his kid, Zoe and actress Amy Brenneman will “definitely be back,” and she has a very intriguing plot in Season 2. And the main query that everyone has is: Will The Old Man Season 2 feature Dan’s Rottweiler dogs again? Of course! “I don’t know if The Old Man is a show without the dogs,” remarked Shotz. He understands.

The cast of Old Man Season 2:

  • Jeff Bridges in the role of Johnny Kohler/Dan Chase
  • Harold Harper, played by John Lithgow
  • Zoe McDonald, played by Amy Brenneman
  • Julian Carson, played by Gbenga Akinnagbe
  • Angela Adams played by Alia Shawkat.

Review of The Old Man’s first season

Like you, we were impressed by The Old Man’s first season, particularly with its nod to the paranoid action thrillers of the 1970s and Bridges and Lithgow’s outstanding performances. This is our evaluation.
