Picsart has launched a new standalone app called SketchAI that uses artificial intelligence to transform a simple, rudimentary sketch into a magnificent work of art.

The program takes only the most basic drawing from the user as a starting point, and it is then able to turn that sketch into an original work of art.

In addition to generating a preliminary drawing or uploading an existing beginning image, users have the option of adding a brief description of the desired end result, which will assist improve the final product.

“Picsart began as a simple sketching app, so this seems like a full circle for the platform,” explains Lusine Harutyunyan, vice president of products at Picsart.

The power to not only draw anything you want on a mobile device but also to transform it into an entirely new work of art is something I never would have believed possible. With this app, we hope to reach a new group of artists, and we can’t wait to see what people create!”

SketchAI resembles NVIDIA Canvas, a free program released to NVIDIA Studio in 2021. Using Canvas, users were able to sketch simple shapes and lines using a palette of 15 tools (including mountains, clouds, grass, and weather effects), and the artificial intelligence model would transform them into a lifelike landscape in real-time.

Canvas likely takes substantially more computational power than Picsart’s SketchAI, which explains why it is capable of producing more complex, lifelike scenes.

Nevertheless, the intended input drawings for Canvas and SketchAI are relatively similar, and Picsart’s program does not need a user to indicate what certain photo parts are before it can generate a finished artwork.

SketchAI is now available for download on iOS and is the most recent in a series of artificial intelligence applications developed by Picsart over the past several months, including AI Avatar, AI Replace, and its AI picture generator.
