Tyrese Maxey is a professional basketball player for the Philadelphia 76ers of the National Basketball Association.
Prior to entering the NBA, he spent four years as a member of the Kentucky Wildcats during his undergraduate years.
Maxey was selected by the Philadelphia 76ers in the first round of the 2020 NBA draught. He was the 21st overall selection and signed a four-year deal with the Philadelphia 76ers.
In his first career start against the Denver Nuggets, he finished with 39 points, seven rebounds, and six assists in a 115-103 defeat against the team.
The Sixers were only allowed to field a rotation of seven players for that particular game due to roster restrictions.
According to NBA statistics, Tyrese Maxey’s 39 points against the Denver Nuggets were the highest ever scored by an NBA rookie in their first career start since the league began keeping track in 1970.

Early life & High School Career
Maxey was born in Dallas, Texas, on November 4, 2000. His father played collegiate basketball with Kelvin Sampson’s Washington State Cougars before coaching himself. Tyrone designed a workout routine for his son Maxey based on his film study of NBA stars Stephen Curry and Kyrie Irving. Maxey’s AAU team won a national title in sixth grade. With his damaged hand, he dribbled the rest of the game in Garland, Texas, where he had fractured his pinky finger.
Maxey played basketball for the Titans at South Garland High School. Second-year player averaged 22.5% of the team’s points and 5.5% of the rebounds. As a sophomore, Maxey scored 22.5 points per game while leading South Garland to their first-ever Texas state basketball tournament trip. Despite his 46 points in the state playoffs, Obra D. Tompkins High School won in overtime.
With the goal of becoming a McDonald’s All-American, he considered quitting South Garland High School after the 2018 season. As a senior, he averaged 21.8 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 3.6 assists. Maxey was selected First-Team All-Area, a McDonald’s All-American, and Texas Mr. Basketball. South Garland advanced to the 2019 Texas 6A Region II finals, where they lost 64–53 against Klein Forest High School.

A five-star recruit since his sophomore year, Maxey was rated No. 14 in the nation by Rivals.com after his second year. He had offers from Michigan State, UC Los Angeles, and Southern Methodist University, but chose to join Kentucky in November 2018, right before his senior high school basketball season.

College Career
Maxey played in Kentucky’s Champions Classic triumph against Michigan State Spartans at MSG. Maxey came off the bench to score 26 points, a school record for a rookie debut, in the Wildcats’ 69–62 win.
After this performance, he went 3-for-15 on three-pointers in four games. A 21-point performance against Lamar Cardinals on November 23 (including four three-pointers) snapped the streak.
When Maxey scored 27 points and grabbed seven rebounds in a 78–70 overtime victory against the Louisville Cardinals on December 28, he earned NCAA Division I National Player of the Week, SEC Freshman of the Week, and USBWA Wayman Tisdale Freshman of the Week awards.
On February 29, 2020, Kentucky defeated Auburn 73–66 to win the SEC regular-season title. Maxey scored 17 points.
The Wildcats were to be the top seed in the 2020 SEC Men’s Basketball Tournament, however, the SEC Tournament and the 2020 NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament were both postponed two weeks later owing to fears about the emerging COVID-19 epidemic, ending Maxey’s rookie season.
Maxey averaged 14 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 3.2 assists per game while leading Kentucky with 34.5 minutes per game. He was chosen to the All-SEC Second Team and the SEC All-Freshman Team. On April 6, 2020, Maxey declared for the 2020 NBA draught.

Daryl Morey, the 76ers’ president of basketball operations, chose Maxey 21st overall in the 2020 NBA draught. Maxey joined the team on December 3, 2020. After scoring eight and 11 points in two preseason games, Doc Rivers named Maxey “one of our major bench players” for the 2020–21 season.
On December 23, his first NBA game, he had six points on 3-for-6 shooting, two assists, and two rebounds in eleven minutes against the Washington Wizards. The 76ers could only field the league-minimum eight players against the Denver Nuggets on January 9 due to injuries to studs Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons. The injury-depleted roster enabled Maxey to start.
Maxey scored 39 points in 44 minutes on 18-of-33 shooting as the Nuggets won 115–103. He recorded the most points by a 76ers rookie since Allen Iverson scored 40 points against the Washington Bullets in 1997. Maxey averaged eight points per game in 61 regular-season games, including eight starts, on 46% shooting and 30% three-point field goals. Personal life
Maxey is the youngest of four siblings. During the 2017–18 college basketball season, their father Tyrone worked for Southern Methodist University, which tried to recruit their son. He spends the NBA season in Voorhees Township, NJ. His Voorhees house caught fire on Christmas Eve 2021 when his family was visiting, but no one was hurt, and the 76ers supplied Maxey and his family with lodging and other services.
Maxey grew up with NBA star R. J. Hampton. They were never partners, always opponents, despite playing basketball in the same area since first grade. “Baggage Claim Boys,” a loose group of elite high school basketball players from the Dallas–Fort Worth metroplex who became pals during their college recruitment season, are his friends. Isaac Likekele and Drew Timme are also in it.

Outside of basketball, Maxey is a huge Marvel Comics and Marvel Cinematic Universe lover. His favorite Marvel movies are Spider-Man: Homecoming and The Avengers, and he has likened himself to Spider-Man. His Tyrese Maxey Foundation has teamed up with Youth Services, Inc. to assist in combat truancy in Philadelphia schools.
