Netflix wants to create even more such programming in the wake of Bridgerton, which was created by Shonda Rhimes, receiving enormous popularity. The Decameron, another soapy historical drama created by the Orange is the New Black creator, has now received the streamer’s approval.
In March 2022, What’s on Netflix truly had the inside track on The Decameron before anybody else. The project was then formally announced by Netflix in August 2022.
Teenage Bounty Hunters creator Kathleen Jordan is behind the show, while Orange is the New Black and Jenji Kohan also executive produced the adolescent drama. Jordan will compose the scripts and direct the show.
Kohan, Blake McCormick, Tara Herrmann, Jordan, and Mike Uppendahl are the executive producers of Tilted Productions’ The Decameron. Jordan remarked:

The plot of the Decameron Series
The Decameron, the well-known collection of funny, racy, and occasionally sad short stories about love by the Italian poet Giovanni Boccaccio from the 14th century, served as a vague inspiration for the new Netflix series.
The Decameron takes place in 1348 when Florence is heavily hit by the Black Death, the greatest pandemic in recorded human history that claimed up to 200 million lives. A small group of nobility is allowed to take refuge in a magnificent home in the Italian countryside with their servants and enjoy a luxury vacation while the plague rages. But when social conventions start to crumble, what begins as a wine-soaked frolic in the Tuscan hills turns into a full-on struggle for survival.

A delightful and raucous cast of characters ties together the series’ relevant themes of class hierarchies, power battles, and surviving during a pandemic while also injecting a light touch of humor. Jordan allegedly took inspiration from The Decameron, a work of ancient Italian writing, and its time and place. But her creative vision for the series is almost entirely unique.
