Is There Any Part of the Movie That Is Based on a True Story?

The movie Not Okay is not based on any real-life events, and all of the characters in the movie are all made up. However, Machine Gun Kelly, Pete Davidson, and Justin Bieber were some of the sources of inspiration for Colin’s character’s appearance.

Even though the events shown in the movie take place in a fictional world, the plot itself is based on actual historical events. The documentary “Not Okay” examines a variety of topics that are relevant in today’s world, such as online harassment, the culture of social media influencers, trauma and mental health, burnout, and self-awareness.

The director of the movie, Quinn Shephard, has mentioned that the script for the movie was written in 2018 “in reaction” to events that were taking place in the country at the time. She disclosed this information in an interview, saying, “At the time, it was peak Trump America, and there was a significant surge in gun murder, and that was all happening played against a backdrop of influencer ads and celebrity gossip and skincare.”

“Waking up and finding myself completely immersed in that world each time I checked my phone was just so bizarre, it seemed like a dream.” She went on to say, “I really wanted to talk about the sensation of cognitive dissonance that comes from those two universes being continually mashed together.”

The film “Not Okay” Dramatizes Deadly Attacks on Schools and in Paris by Terrorists

The shooting at the school is a significant event that takes place in the movie. Even though it was a made-up story in the movie, the situation actually occurs rather frequently in the real world. The film also depicted terrorist attacks in Paris, however they were not identical to the ones that occurred in 2015 and resulted in the deaths of 137 people.

Shephard wanted the events to be portrayed properly and in an accurate manner because of the delicate nature of the themes they dealt with. She admitted, “I have a tremendous lot of empathy for and respect for trauma survivors, and I am very vehemently opposed to the use of firearms.”

“To tell you the truth, it was terrifying,” she continued, “but I tried to have faith that if I wrote from a very true place in my heart of wanting to never ever speak where it wasn’t my place or depict those things with humor or satire, I wanted those to feel like they were very seriously handled by the film.”
