Downtown Abbey A New Era Synopsis
Tom Branson, the widowed son-in-law of the Earl of Grantham, marries Lucy Smith in 1928. Lucy Smith is the illegitimate daughter of Lady Maud Bagshaw and the sole heir to her estate. Lady Maud Bagshaw was Queen Mary’s lady-in-waiting. The family is taken aback when the Dowager Countess of Grantham, Violet Crawley, reveals that she was given a property in the South of France by the Marquis de Montmirail, who has since passed away.
The news comes as a complete surprise to the rest of the family. She will bequeaths it to her great-granddaughter Sybbie, who is the daughter that Tom had with Lady Sybil Crawley before she passed away.
A motion picture production firm is interested in shooting their upcoming silent feature, “The Gambler,” at Downton Abbey. After Robert’s eldest daughter and estate manager, Lady Mary Talbot, convinces him that the money would be sufficient to fix Downton Abbey’s leaky roof, he reconsiders his decision to decline the offer. The members of the domestic staff are excited to see the film stars, but they are put off by the haughtiness of the lead actress, Myrna Dalgliesh.
The family is invited to stay in the villa by Montmirail. His mother has the intention of challenging Violet Crawley’s title of the property. However, according to the family attorney, there is no foundation for a claim, and as a result, the villa is legally considered to be Violet’s property.
The marquis has a private conversation with Robert, during which he drops a bombshell on him by suggesting that Robert and the Dowager Countess could be half-brothers on the basis of Robert’s birth date, which is nine months after the Dowager Countess’s visit in 1864. That night, Cora discloses to Robert that she may be suffering from a condition that is terminal. Robert sobs uncontrollably when he considers the possibility of losing his mother, the Crawley name, and his wife all within a short period of time.
As a result of the rise of “talkie” pictures, “The Gambler” was canceled at Downton because the studio determined that silent films were no longer profitable. Dubbing in the dialogue for the sequences that have already been completed is the solution that Lady Mary proposes for saving the project. The voice of actor Guy Dexter is appropriate for the role, however Myrna Dalgleish’s use of a cockney accent is unsuitable for the role of an upper-class woman. It has been suggested by Mrs. Hughes that Lady Mary could record the voice of Dalgleish.
Dalgleish decides to leave the production because she is concerned for the future of her career, but Downton staff Anna and Daisy convince her to finish the movie. Mr. Molesley, a former footman at Downton Abbey who is able to lip-read, reconstructs the conversation for dubbing and writes a dialogue-driven narrative for the remainder of the plot.
While shooting is still going on, the Crawley family has relocated back to Downton. Lady Mary is uninterested in director Jack Barber’s advances, despite the fact that her marriage has become more strained as a result of her husband Henry’s extended absence due to his participation in an automobile rally. Thomas Barrow, the closeted butler at Downton Abbey, has decided to take Dexter up on his offer to run his Hollywood house and be his traveling companion.
Cora has been given a diagnosis of pernicious anemia by Dr. Clarkson, which is a condition that can be treated. In order to perhaps save Dalgleish’s career, Cora assists her in developing an American accent. Edith, who feels restrained and unhappy in her role as a marchioness, plans to continue working at the magazine she founded in London.
Daisy and Andy, two newlywed servants at Downton Abbey, hatch a plot to set up Daisy’s ex-father-in-law, Mr. Mason, with the chef at Downton, Mrs. Patmore. The Downton Abbey cast and crew step in to take the place of the film’s underpaid extras so that the production may continue uninterrupted. Molesley is presented with a tempting offer from Barber to work as a screenwriter.
After that, Molesley makes a marriage proposal to Miss Baxter, completely oblivious to the fact that he is being recorded on an open microphone.
Violet reassures Robert that the late Lord Grantham was indeed his father and that she did not have an affair with Montmirail during their time together. Violet’s health continues to deteriorate, and she passes away while surrounded by the people she loves. Mary approaches Mr. Carson with a request to educate footman Andy in the role of butler.
After some time has passed, Tom and Lucy eventually make their way back to Downton with their newborn child. A recently commissioned portrait of the late Dowager Countess can now be found hanging in the main hall.
