In his teens, he went to Amityville Memorial High School on Long Island. There, he met Vincent Mason, Kelvin Mercer, and Paul Houston, whom he became friends with.

After being in different local groups as solo artists, Jolicoeur, Mason, and Mercer eventually decided to make their own rap group. They called it De La Soul and used the stage names Trugoy the Dove, Maseo, and Posdnuos.

Later in his career, Jolicoeur said that the first part of his stage name was just a funny play on the word “yoghurt,” which has an anagram that starts with the same letters. Houston, who was better known as Prince Paul, kept working as the group’s producer.

Critics and journalists called the members of the group “the hippies of hip hop” because of the way they dressed and the positive messages in their first album, 3 Feet High and Rising (a title that the group was quick to refute with the release of the second album De La Soul Is Dead in 1991).

Illness, Death, and Cause of Death

In the last years of his life, Jolicoeur was diagnosed with congestive heart failure and had to wear a LifeVest defibrillator machine to treat its symptoms.

In November 2017, in a special scene from the video clip for “Royalty Capes,” a song from De La Soul’s 2016 album And the Anonymous Nobody, he talked about his health problems for the first time in public.

At the beginning of the video, Jolicoeur talked about how his heart problems made it hard for him to perform and tour with the group regularly.

He said, “[The LifeVest defibrillator] will shock me, and hopefully bring me back from the matrix.” I can’t wait to go back on stage. I miss it. I love going on trips and being with my friends. I want that thing back.

At the 65th Annual Grammy Awards on February 5, 2023, De La Soul did a special performance for the 50 Years of Hip-Hop. They played their 1988 song “Buddy,” but Jolicoeur was not there with the rest of the group.
