Bryan Kohberger was arrested in connection with the killings at an Idaho college in November 2022, and he is now waiting for his preliminary hearing, which is set for the end of June 2023.
He is charged with four counts of first-degree murder and one count of burglary because he broke into a house where four University of Idaho students lived off campus and killed them while they were sleeping.
Strangely, the 28-year-old suspect was a Ph.D. student at Washington State University doing research in Criminology. With DNA and surveillance evidence, it took the investigators six weeks to catch Kohberger at his parents’ house in Albrightsville, Pennsylvania.

Friends and classmates of Bryan Kohberger have said that his parents were “truly kind people” and that they were a “warm-hearted” family in every way.
Both of them worked in the Pleasant Valley School District in Pennsylvania, where they raised Kohberger and his two older sisters, Amanda and Melissa.
His 67-year-old father, Michael Kohberger Jr., worked for the school district as a maintenance worker for 13 years, from 2006 to 2019.
At the same time, his 62-year-old mother, Maryann Kohberger, was a substitute teacher who helped students with special needs until she retired in 2020.
Deja Mann, who went to school with Kohberger, said that Maryann was “the kindest person” and that she was well-liked at work. Mann did notice, though, that Maryann didn’t talk much about her “loner” son. This suggested that their relationship was complicated.
Maryann was also an outspoken registered Democrat who had said in the past that she did not support abortion or the death penalty. After the shooting at Uvalde Elementary School, she spoke out against gun violence.
The family has also had some money problems. In the past 15 years, they have gone bankrupt twice, once in 1996 and again in 2010. During their second bankruptcy, they had less than $450 in savings and $260,000 in debt.
Bryan Kohberger and his father went on a cross-country road trip that they had planned before he killed the people in Idaho. Michael had come to Washington to see Bryan for Christmas, and the two of them were going back to Pennsylvania for Bryan’s winter break.
Kohberger’s Parents Said in a Statement That They Support the “Presumption of Innocence” for Their Son
On January 1, 2023, Kohberger’s parents spoke out about the criminal case against their son for the first time. In a statement released by his public defender, Jason A. LaBar, the Kohbergers wrote that they felt sorry for the victims and their families:
“First and foremost, we care deeply for the four families who have lost their precious children. There are no words that can adequately express the sadness we feel, and we pray each day for them.”
But Bryan Kohberger’s family said they still supported him and were willing to help with the legal process. They said they wanted to “promote his presumption of innocence rather than judge unknown facts and make wrong assumptions.”
In another interview with the press, Kohberger’s lawyer, LaBar, confirmed that Kohberger’s parents don’t think their son killed the people. They said it was “out of character” for their son to do what he did. He said:
“His family does not believe it to be Bryan. They can’t believe this; they are obviously very shocked. This is certainly completely out of character, the allegations, and really, they’re just trying to be supportive – with the understanding that these four families have suffered losses.”
