Brett Kavanaugh’s wife defended him from sexual assault, “Because he knows his heart.” In 2018, the alleged conduct of Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh became public knowledge. Several women accused Kavanaugh of sexual misbehavior and sexual assault prior to his appointment to the Supreme Court by former President Donald Trump.

Now, the claims against Kavanaugh are the focus of Doug Liman’s under-the-radar documentary, Justice. The documentary contains interviews with Christine Blasey Ford, who testified before Congress that Kavanaugh attempted to sexually assault her in high school. In addition, several women have come forward with allegations dating back to his time at Yale.

On the morning of Justice’s premiere at Sundance on January 20, Kavanaugh’s team kept silent regarding the film’s content, although he has always denied sexual misbehavior.

Prior to Trump’s nomination of Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court in July 2018, Kavanaugh practiced law in Washington, D.C. In 1990, upon his graduation from Yale Law School, he met Ashley Estes, a former personal assistant to President George W. Bush. She is currently a town manager in the Washington, D.C. suburbs, per The Washington Post.

Bush appointed Kavanaugh to the position of White House staff secretary in 2003. Bush and his wife, Laura, attended Estes and Kavanaugh’s wedding in Washington, D.C., the following year.

The newlyweds continued to advance their political careers. Brett was appointed to the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia in 2006.

Kavanaugh was then nominated to the Supreme Court in 2018. Shortly thereafter, when Christine Blasey Ford’s claims of sexual assault initially came to light, Ashley defended her husband.

During an appearance with Fox News host Martha MacCallum, the Kavanaughs denied Brett’s sexual misbehavior while seated next to one another.

When questioned if she believed in Brett’s innocence, Ashley stated unequivocally that her husband was wrongfully accused. “I mean, I’ve known Brett for seventeen years,” Ashley explained.

“This is completely out of character. It is quite difficult to believe. He’s decent. He is a kind person. He is talented. I understand his character. This is contrary to Brett’s character.”

Following Blasey Ford’s hearing in October 2018, Congress determined that there was “no corroboration of the claims.” Two days later, Kavanaugh was sworn in as the 114th Supreme Court justice for a lifetime term.

Despite the fact that Congress and the Kavanaugh family have apparently chosen not to accept the allegations, the producers of Justice hope the film will revive the debate. Amy Herdy, the film’s producer, stated that she wants the new information to provide additional evidence of Kavanaugh’s past.

“I certainly hope this causes outrage and action,” she told Variety. I hope this initiates a real investigation with subpoena powers.

Doug Liman, who began filming Justice after seeing Blasey Ford’s testimony, stated that he has no control over the documentary’s outcome, but that he has done his part to bring the women’s experiences to light.
