Early life
Steffen began playing soccer at five with the local rec league West Bradford Youth Athletics in Coatesville, Pennsylvania (WBYA). As a defender for the local team West Chester United, he began his travel soccer career. When his team’s goalie couldn’t make it to a game, he decided to become a goalkeeper. A member of the U.S. Soccer Development Academy during his high school career, he first joined FC DELCO in 2008. Prior to transferring to Downingtown West High School, where he played for the Whippets in the autumn and for DELCO in the spring, Steffen spent his first two years of schooling at Malvern Preparatory School. As a senior at Downingtown, he was voted the Ches-Mont League MVP and garnered all-PIAA and all-American accolades for his performance on the football field.
One of the first players to come out of the Philadelphia Union Academy, Steffen was a member of the Union U17 squad in 2012.
Coached by Jim Curtin, his squad includes future players Connor Maloney, Zach Pfeffer, Drew Skundrich, Brian White, and Zach Zandi as well as future Penn State kicker Joey Julius. They won the 2012 Generation Adidas Cup by defeating the Toronto FC Academy on penalties. Steffen left Maryland after his second year and signed a professional deal with SC Freiburg in Germany. Assigned to SC Freiburg II, a club reserve squad competing in the fourth tier of Regionalliga Südwest, he joined midway through the 2014–15 season. In his first season with Freiburg II, Steffen made two substitute appearances, but he didn’t make his reserve team debut until the following year.
