A winger for FC Dallas and the United States national team, Paul Joseph Arriola (born February 5, 1995) is an American professional soccer player.
Early life
Arriola was a member of the Arsenal FC Development Academy in Temecula, California, for several years until joining the Los Angeles Galaxy’s academy in 2013. The club has produced several notable players, including Carlos Bocanegra and Hector Jimenez.
When Tijuana requested Arriola to practice with them in December 2012, he had previously tried out for the club. In 2012, after being given a professional contract by the LA Galaxy, Arriola chose to join Club Tijuana of Liga MX, Mexico’s premier soccer league, rather than return to the Galaxy. Edgar Castillo, Herculez Gomez, Joe Corona, and Greg Garza were all American-born players that joined the Xolos. At 18 miles from his home in San Diego, Arriola decided to join Tijuana instead of the Galaxy because of its proximity. “I felt that Xolos was the location for me,” Arriola himself said. Because it is my home team and the people there are lovely, I am a fan of the club. Arriola and his family may now live in the United States, but he can still travel over the border for training and games.
On July 6, 2013, Arriola made his team debut against Club América at Petco Park in San Diego as part of a preseason friendly. Arriola’s goal in the 54th minute gave Tijuana a 5–0 lead in the 5–2 win. On the first day of the 2013–14 Liga MX season, Arriola made his professional league debut in a 3–3 tie against Club Atlas on July 19, 2013. Only four minutes into his second-half appearance, Arriola set up Daro Benedetto’s goal for the visitors. Arriola scored his second goal in the CONCACAF Champions League against C.D. Victoria just a few days later.
