Florence Leontine Mary Welch was born in Camberwell, London, England, on August 28, 1986 to Nick and Evelyn Welch. Welch has dual British and American citizenship through her mother. Welsh’s Scottish grandmother Cybil Welch encouraged her to pursue her burgeoning singing and performing abilities during her youth.

In 2007, she recorded the album Plans while leading the band Ashok. 2008 saw the release of her debut singles, Kiss With A Fist and Dog Days Are Over, which peaked at No. 51 and No. 23 on the Billboard Hot 100, respectively.
