Who Was Diana Nyad?

One of Nyad’s most iconic achievements was her successful swim from Cuba to Florida in 2013 at the age of 64. This historic feat made her the first person to complete the 110-mile swim without the use of a shark cage. Nyad made global headlines in 1975 when she swam in record time around Manhattan (28 mi or 45 km) and again in 1979 when she swam from North Bimini, The Bahamas, to Juno Beach, Florida (102 mi or 164 km).

In 2013, at the age of 64, she completed the third known swim crossing of the Florida Straits, after Walter Poenisch in 1978 and Susie Maroney in 1997, by swimming from Havana, Cuba, to Key West, Florida. Both previous attempts included a shark cage and, in Poenisch’s case, fins and a few short naps aboard his escort ship.

Nyad employed a jellyfish suit, shark divers, and electronic shark-repellent devices to defend himself. Her crossing from Cuba to Florida was rejected because of insufficient paperwork, contradicting crew reports, and restrictions from an organization that did not exist at the time of the swim. Nyad’s feat was canceled by the Guinness Book of World Records.

Her 2013 swim was included in Annette Bening and Jodie Foster’s 2023 Netflix movie Nyad.

Is Diana Nyad in a Romantic Relationship?

Diana Nyad has never been scared to be open about her sexuality as an adult. She said in an interview with Larry King that she came out as a lesbian when she was 21 years old. Prior to that, she suffered from homophobic views and a culture of being highly closed when in high school in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

By the time she was in college, she felt comfortable coming out to her mother. Fortunately, Diana’s mother was immediately open and accepting. Her love life, on the other hand, has been significantly less ambitious than her athletic career.

When asked if she had ever tried to date males to hide her true sexuality, Diana replied, “I would never say I dated.”

Diana, true to habit, has never stated whether or not she is currently involved, and her relationship status remains ambiguous to this day. She did, however, reportedly investigate something with her close friend Bonnie.

Bonnie revealed that she and Diana dated briefly in an interview with Digital Spy. They remained excellent friends even after their relationship became platonic.
