Some scenes do a great job of building up tension and dread, leaving viewers wondering what will happen next, like when we wait to find out if Seung-golden Cheon’s spoon worked or not. The show also does a great job of telling a story about how desperate and smart choices can go back and forth, and what happens when they do.

Seung-decisions Cheon’s aren’t made out of the blue; they are based on his social status and how well he understands it. Things do change for him overnight, but it becomes clearer and clearer that trading his poverty for wealth might have cost him his freedom. Seung-personality Cheon has changed in a way that is both interesting and surprising. He no longer hesitates like he used to, and instead walks the line between confidence and arrogance.

At first, Yook Sung-Jae, who is in the boy band BtoB, doesn’t seem like the right person to play Lee Seung-Cheon. His cute, boyish looks seem better suited to the comedy in “Goblin” or the drama in “Mystic Pop-up Bar.” But luckily, it doesn’t take him long to get out of the role of the weak underdog. He does a great job as Seung-Cheon, using his newfound power in a way that makes it seem like he has always been an elite. Seung-Cheon is still attached to his old life, and sometimes even misses it, even though he has everything he wants.

Most of the other characters in The Golden Spoon, however, don’t have these shades of grey. Instead, they are either poor but kind or rich but rude and cruel. So far, only Lee Jong-Tae-Yong won and Jung Chae-Na Yeon’s Ju-hee is different. On the outside, Tae-Yong seems like the confident heir to a chaebol, but he is really scared of his abusive father. Ju-hee wants to be known for something other than her family’s money and power. She wants to be more than just a pawn in her father’s business plans or a pretty face on someone’s arm.

The Golden Spoon is full of promise after just two episodes. It gives the drama and fantasy elements more depth by giving the characters human motivations that are easy to understand. This makes it easy for viewers to put themselves in the characters’ shoes by asking a subtle but powerful question: if you were in the same situation, would you have done anything differently?
