Island Episode 1 and 2 Review and Highlights: Doesn’t a show about a mismatched group of people trying to stop the evil need to be funny? It doesn’t have to be a laugh-a-minute, but it should have some funny parts to balance out the dark and sad things we usually see in this genre. The best shows like this have just the right amount of comedy to balance out the more serious parts. Studio Dragon in South Korea has put all of these things into a new Prime Video series.

About Plotline
A chaebol daughter named Won Mi Ho, played by Lee Da Hee, is sent to Jeju Island to hide from the media and act like she’s sorry for what she did in Seoul. This is where a long-time prophecy comes into play. As the only heir to the Daeho Group, she is used to getting what she wants. But when demons come after her, she gets the biggest shock of her life. Van, who is half-human and half-demon, uses his weapon to help her get out of the situation. On the other hand, a Catholic priest named Yohan works with others to get rid of the lust demons. The three also meet Gungtan, who used to be Van’s friend when he was young but now wants to hurt him. The Korean web series is a thrilling way to start the new year, with a lot of action, fantasy, and thrills.
Point of View
In the first two episodes of “Island,” many of the tropes that are likely to come up in the next few days were introduced. Won Mi Ho’s chaebol world is as K-drama-like as it gets, and Lee Da Hee, who is used to playing heiresses with sass and beauty that can’t be beaten, does a great job as always. She always gets great parts, and this one seems to be another nod to the type of character that seems to be her favorite. We’ve seen it before in “My Beauty Inside,” when she played Kang Sara, and it looks like the same person is in “Island.” It might not be a bad thing, but we’d really like to see something different. As she defends herself, she also seems to like some light action again, as we saw in “Search: WWW.” Won Mi Ho’s fate brought her to Jeju island, and no matter what she does, she can’t get away from it.
When she meets her first demon, she tries to run away, but she can’t. That’s when Van, played by Kim Nam Gil, comes in as the “demon slayer.” At first glance, the actor with a clean shave looks a lot younger than he usually does in his other roles. In fact, he might as well have turned back time, because his action scenes make him look like he’s in his twenties. His relationship with Won Mi Ho is complicated because the past makes him think of the woman who was supposed to save him but couldn’t, as well as the woman he killed himself but has no memory of. Guilt follows him, and so does the charm of this young woman who wants to protect herself. They make a deal, which we think is one of the silliest parts of the show, but we’re willing to wait for more information.
As Priest Giovanni or Yohan, Cha Eun Woo is nothing like what you might have thought. With headphones on his head and sneakers under his black cloak, he handles demons and spirits with ease while listening to upbeat music. This is the first time the actor has played such a different character, which should give him a chance to try new things and show his growth.
Island: to Stream or to Skip?
As we see scenes of a green mountain with a lake on top, we hear about Tamra and the story of 46 child demons who were turned into statues and kept in a place called Hell’s Gate. We move on to a photographer telling this story to a newlywed couple as they climb to a beautiful spot for photos.
Two of the statues are at the scenic point, and when the newlyweds look at them, they break apart into embers, ash, and slugs. The photographer finds out the hard way that these two have become “lust demons” who are ready to cause trouble on Jeju Island and around the world. Ban (Kim Nam-Gil), who was wearing a black suit, suddenly sped into the remote area in a hurry and killed the groom demon with his dagger.
Father John (Cha Eun-woo), an expert on demons, is in the middle of an exorcism at a remote mountain monastery when he is called and told about the Jeju Island legend. There are signs that the demons are about to take over the world, and Father John’s job is to help a young woman who will be brought back to the island as a savior.
In Seoul, Won Mi-ho (Lee Da-hee) is about to jump over her aunt, who is a major shareholder, and take over her father’s business empire. But when a video of her flipping over another driver in traffic goes viral, and Mi-ho thinks her aunt is to blame, her father sends her to Jeju Island to teach at Tamra High School, at least until the heat from the video goes away. She goes with Butler Jang (Oh Kwang-rok), her loyal assistant and trusted friend, who was going to retire to Jeju to farm.
As soon as she gets to the airport, the lust demon that has taken over the bride’s body attacks her. When she is trapped in the back of a truck, Ban flies in, chases the demon, and kills it. It turns out that Ban has been alive since the early days of Jeju Island when a priest rounded up the children there and gave them demons’ blood so they could fight as half-human, half-demon hybrids. Only Ban and another boy named Gungtan (Sung Joon) made it out alive.
