Fans of the psychological thriller series “You” have been eagerly anticipating the release of the fifth season, eager to delve back into the twisted world of Joe Goldberg.
You is a Netflix Original romantic crime thriller created by Greg Berlanti and adapted from Caroline Kepnes’ novels, ‘You’ and ‘Hidden Bodies’.
Following a bloody finish to Joe’s adventure in London, the beloved serial killer of Netflix has returned to American territory, leaving a trail of victims in his wake.
Originally aired on Lifetime before moving to Netflix, the streaming giant’s global reach drove ‘You’ to unparalleled heights of success in the criminal drama genre. It quickly rose to become one of Netflix’s most popular programs.
As the suspenseful narratives and unexpected plot twists continue to captivate audiences, many are left wondering when they can expect the next installment. In this article, we’ll explore what information is currently available regarding the release date for “You” Season 5.
Is You Season 5 Renewed?
Netflix has officially declared that the critically acclaimed series ‘You’ will return for its fifth and final season, although persistent strikes are causing significant disruptions in the show’s development and production.
In March 2023, it was revealed that Netflix had renewed ‘You’ for a fifth and final season.
The upcoming season will see major changes, with Sera Gamble stepping away as showrunner after four seasons in charge. Despite her departure, she will remain an executive producer on the project. Meanwhile, executive producers Michael Foley and Justin W. Lo will take over as co-showrunners.
When Will You Season 5 Be Released?
Despite the fact that the series was renewed prior to the start of the WGA strike. According to WhatsOnNetflix, the actors’ organization, SAG AFTRA, then went on strike against production companies in July 2023. It is expected that season 5 will be released in late 2024.
Although the series was renewed prior to the start of the WGA strike on May 1, the scripts may not have been completed in time to allow filming to begin. The concomitant actor strike adds to the difficulties.
Finally, production on the fifth season of ‘You’ will begin once both the writers’ and performers’ unions reach new agreements. Unfortunately, a specific timeline for these resolutions is still unknown.
What Will Happen in You Season 5?
Given that season 4 began with an English whodunit, there’s no telling what a future season 5 would be about. Penn Badgley first stated regarding Season 4: “It’s structured differently.” We’ve taken the format and it’s evolving; you’re not just seeing Joe in a different city; we’re on a different kind of adventure.”
Of course, the series is based on Caroline Kepnes’ books, thus her third novel might very well be the primary material for season 5. Season 4’s script and story diverged from Kepnes’ books, but who’s to say the series won’t return to her works in season 5?
You Love Me, the third installment in her You book series, was released in 2021. It follows Joe as he travels to the Pacific Northwest and falls in love with adorable librarian Mary Kay DiMarco. But he’s determined to prove he’s a changed guy and attempts to woo her without his normal obsessive behavior, even landing a job in the peaceful town.
While Mary Kay sounds similar to Marianne, it’s possible that her plot thread will be explored in season 5, or Joe will find a way into the life of another librarian who also happens to be a mother and friend.
However, Kepnes will be releasing a fourth novel in her You series in April 2023. For You and Only You follows Joe to Harvard, where he is awarded a prestigious writing fellowship. As in season 4, he’ll be exposed to a close-knit network of wealthy people and fall in love with Wonder Parish, a woman with the same attitude as Joe who could be his literary match.

Can he truly walk around the world unnoticed after faking his own death in season 3 and then assuming an alias as Jonathan Moore in season 4 – only to be re-revealed to the world as Joe? There’s undoubtedly a lot of source material for future seasons, and given how Season 4 concluded, we can only hope that Joe gets his comeuppance sooner rather than later.
We do know that season 5 will “bring Joe Goldberg’s journey to its delightfully twisted conclusion,” according to Gamble.
