Where Did Willow Filming Take Place?

Fantasy film Willow’s main character went on an adventure through made-up places like Nelwyn and Nockmaar, but where was the movie shot?

Here’s a quick look at the places where the fantasy movie Willow was shot. George Lucas, who made Star Wars, came up with the idea for Willow. He first thought of the story in the early 1970s.

Over a decade later, when Lucas met the film’s star Warwick Davis on the set of Return of the Jedi, where Davis played Wicket the Ewok, and reunited with his American Graffiti star Ron Howard, who wanted to direct a fantasy movie, production finally began.

Willow Ufgood, played by Warwick Davis, is a sorcerer-in-training from the dwarf-like Nelwyn people. He is told to bring a human baby girl back to her people, the Daikini, because it is said that she will bring down the evil Queen Bavmorda (Jean Marsh).

Willow teams up with different people along the way to help him complete his quest. These people include the Daikini swordsman Madmartigan (Val Kilmer) and two naughty brownies (Kevin Pollak and Rick Overton).

Willow takes place in a land that doesn’t have a name, but later books call it “Mother World.” Willow’s journey takes him through several made-up places in the Mother World, such as his peaceful village in Nelwyn Valley, the nearby kingdom of Tir Asleen, and the scary land of Nockmaar, where the evil Queen Bavmorda lives.

Brocket Hall in Hertfordshire was where the outside scenes of Willow Ufgood’s village were filmed. However, George Lucas and Ron Howard used a background plate from a region in southern China in a shot of the Nelwyn Valley.

In the same way, footage from New Zealand’s North Island’s Tongariro National Park was used as the background for Queen Bavmorda’s castle in Nockmaar, even though the castle itself was just a facade built at Wales’s Snowdonia National Park’s Dinorwic Slate Quarry.

Willow’s other outdoor scenes were shot in and around Queenstown on New Zealand’s South Island. The scene in which the Queen’s soldiers chase Willow and Madmartigan in a cart was shot in Epping Forest in Greater London.

In the movie, there are two waterfalls: Burney Falls in California and Powerscourt Waterfall in County Wicklow, Ireland. Other scenes were shot in the woods near Skywalker Ranch in northern California.

Willow wasn’t a big hit with critics, and it wasn’t the blockbuster that the industry was hoping for from a company like Lucasfilm. Still, Willow has become something of a cult classic in the years since it came out, and it is about to get a sequel in the form of a Disney+ TV show. Warwick Davis is set to play the lead role again, and it’s been said that the Willow sequel series may be filmed in Wales again.
