Lightyear, the most recent installment in the Toy Story prequel series, has been a hot topic of discussion for a number of reasons, including censorship for the film’s LGBTQ+ themes and the filmmakers’ own artistic choices. At long last, Tim Allen has spoken out against Chris Evans, the actor who took over voicing the title role after he left the project.

In an interview, Allen revealed that he did not participate in this production because he believed that this prequel was quite divorced from the spirit of the original series which had been a significant part of his life. Allen clarified his silence, saying, “The simple answer is I’ve remained out of this ’cause it has nothing to do [with my Buzz Lightyear].”

The actor explained his absence from the new prequel by saying, “It’s a fantastic narrative,” referring to Lightyear. “It just doesn’t appear to have any relationship to the toy, and it’s a little… I don’t know. It just has no link to Buzz. It’s just no connection. I wish there was a greater connection.”

According to Allen, there have been conversations about such a project for a long. He had been asked to perform the voice for the toy astronaut and originally, he was intrigued by the production: “We talked about this many years ago. It came up in one of the sessions. I remarked, ‘What a fun movie it would be.’”

However, Allen changed his mind when he understood that the staff wasn’t the same anymore. As the actor put it, “this is a brand new team that really had nothing to do with the original movie.” We’re [Tom] Hanks and me. There would be no Buzz from Toy Story if not for Woody.

Tom Hanks has expressed confusion about Tim Allen’s absence from the Lightyear cast as the voice of Buzz.

When the movie was first announced, many people thought Allen would provide his voice. However, Chris Evans was outed as the person who would be taking on this role.

Evans defended his casting, explaining that the movie was inspired by the real-life astronaut and not the toy. At the same time, director Angus MacLane said that the move was deliberate.

After being questioned if it was “weird to be in theaters beside a Buzz Lightyear picture,” Hanks, who voices Woody in Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis, said, “How about that?” They wouldn’t allow Tim Allen to go head to head with him, and I really wanted to. I can’t fathom how you could say that.

Evans said, “Sure, yeah, I know,” when informed that he was playing the part.

Here’s the problem,” he went on, “I want to walk back into the theater with a bunch of strangers and come out having something in common. To that end, I’m looking forward to going to the movies with [Allen].

Since they initially worked together in 1995 to give their respective voices to characters in the original Toy Story film, Hanks and Allen have remained close friends. Three sequels were released between 1999 and 2019 with the same cast.
