We reported earlier this month that Matt Reeves would meet with DC Studios’ new co-heads James Gunn and Peter Safran to discuss the future of the BatVerse, and it appears that the meeting was a success.
In addition to the impressive slate of DCU films and series announced at a top-secret press conference this week, the sequel to The Batman has been officially added to the calendar. On October 3, 2025, Robert Pattinson‘s caped crusader will return.

Gunn also confirmed that Reeves is actively working on his “Batman Crime Saga,” which includes the Colin Farrell spin-off series The Penguin, which is scheduled to begin filming next month.

As previously revealed, The Penguin will have a direct connection to The Batman—Part II and will essentially lay the groundwork for where things stand when Bruce Wayne returns to the screen.
Additional information, including a plot summary, is currently under wraps.
Here is the official synopsis and trailer
“To me, the thing that I really feel is that I also believe that Rob [Pattinson] is so special in the role. My goal has always been to do these point-of-view stories that allow the character to always be the emotional center of the story. Because a lot of times what happens is, after you do the first one, then suddenly other Rogues Gallery characters come in, and they kind of take over, and then Batman takes a backseat sort of character-wise, or emotionally.”
In the wake of the Gunn-Safran appointment, the sequel was aiming for a 2025 release date, so it’s reassuring to see that things appear to be proceeding as planned.
Gunn appears extremely pleased with Reeves’s plans, stating, “Matt is currently working on [The Batman sequel], which he considers to be part of the Batman Crime Saga, which also includes [The Penguin] series and is its own entity.

Safran also affirmed that Batman will not be sidelined in favor of the direction they intend to take with their other Batman-centric stories “Batman is not an only child. We are fully invested in Batman’s success, just as we are in the success of everything else.”
