Season three of Sweet Magnolias is now available on Netflix! And it’s exactly what we needed to hear after the cliffhanger ending.
Following the renewal announcement, executive producer Dan Paulson stated, “We’re thrilled to be embarking on our third season for Netflix, and we’re looking forward to returning to Serenity.”
The cast also helped to spread the word on social media, with JoAnna Garcia Swisher, Brooke Elliott, and Heather Headley all sharing the news.
If you’ve been following Sweet Magnolias, you’ll know that Maddie, Dana Sue, and Helen all have big decisions to make, and whatever they decide will seemingly affect the entire town of Serenity.
Thank God for an endless supply of margaritas to talk about their problems over.
Life has undoubtedly become more complicated for the trio, who are doing their best to navigate life and love in their humble white-picket-fence town.
But, after a cliffhanger that could have major ramifications for all of them, let’s have a drink and talk about what to expect in the upcoming season.
Sweet Magnolias Season 3 Premiere Date: When Will It Return?
Season three of Sweet Magnolias was confirmed on the writers’ room social media in May 2022.
They simply wrote the following message: “We’re returning to Serenity, everyone! We are thrilled to announce that Season 3 of Sweet Magnolias is now available. I can’t wait to see you all.”
On July 18, filming on the new episodes began, and the team shared a photo of their directors’ chairs backs with flowers and the show’s name.
“‘Should we begin?” they asked. “I’m so excited to welcome everyone back to Serenity for day one of Sweet Magnolias Season 3 filming!”
With this in mind, we can expect them to be finished within the next few months. We’ll keep an eye out and keep you posted.
It is unknown when the girls will return to our screens. It’s also difficult to make an educated guess, given that the previous two seasons didn’t have a similar release date.
Season one was released in May 2020, and season two was released in February 2022. (this was largely down to pushbacks caused by the pandemic).
A show like this, which requires few special effects, can usually be completed in nine months to a little more than a year. Having said that, we don’t expect any new Sweet Magnolias episodes to air in the spring of 2023. (so between April to June).
Who Will Appear in Sweet Magnolias Season 3?
Sweet Magnolias wouldn’t be the same without the central magnolias – JoAnna Garcia Swisher (as Maddie Townsend), Brooke Elliot (as Dana Sue Sullivan), and Heather Headley (Helen Decatur). All have confirmed their plans to return.
Tyler (played by Carson Rowland), Kyle (Logan Allen), and Annie (Anneliese Judge) will all return.
Chris Klein plays the philandering character. Bill had a smaller role in season two, but he still has an impact on the main cast, so he’ll probably make an appearance or two… even if it’s just to check in on his many, many offspring.
Jamie Lynn Spears, who plays new mom Noreen, has also confirmed her return, posting photos from her dressing room on the first day of filming on Instagram with the caption “It’s giving #Season3.”
The natural blonde had previously teased Noreen’s return with a photo of herself dyeing her hair brown, the color of her character’s hair.
In season two, Brandon Quinn, who plays Maddie’s on/off husband Ronnie, had a redemption arc and was welcomed back into the family home. So, unless something major happens and a time jump occurs, you can probably count on his return.
Meanwhile, young Isaac (Chris Medlin) has only recently regained his footing after searching for his birth parents in Serenity, and Cal (Justin Bruening) was arrested after flying off the handle as old anger issues resurfaced, but it would be surprising if he vanished without a trace.
There may be some new additions to the show as well, but we’ll let you know about them as soon as they’re announced.
What Will happen in Sweet Magnolias Season 3?
It’s safe to say that the third episode of the show has A LOT to cover.
Sweet Magnolias star JoAnna Garcia Swisher told ET earlier this year that season three would most likely pick up “close to where we left off,” adding, “I don’t think you can come back months later and say, ‘Whatever happened with Helen?’ and ‘Is Justin in jail?’ Why not go big or go home?”
Even before it was confirmed, showrunner Sheryl J Anderson made no secret of her desire for a season three, teasing what awaits the gang. Especially when a shady figure from Dana Sue’s past returns to haunt her.
Dana Sue’s daughter Annie was approached at Mrs. Francis’s wake by a mystery woman who called her mother a “life ruiner” in the season two finale. By the end of the episode, the same woman was caught on camera slashing Sullivan’s delivery van’s tires.
When the trio saw the footage, Maddy, Dana Sue, and Helen recognized her right away – and they only had one thing to say: “She’s back.”
“I will just say she has a past in common with our ladies and some other folks in town,” showrunner Sheryl J Anderson said of this mysterious figure.
“She’s been gone for a while, but she’s returned with a plan.” She has returned home to settle some old scores.”
Dana is also attempting to mend her marriage with Ronnie after allowing him back into the family home. Will their reconciliation last, or will he revert to his old ways, which included cheating on her?
However, Dana Sue is only the beginning of what’s going on, as the season ended on a cliffhanger when Helen was proposed to by her ex-boyfriend Ryan. She must now choose between him and her new love, Erik.
“I could see her going either way, and they don’t tell me,” Headley said to TVLine. “Netflix is worried that I’ll spill all the secrets for a good bowl of macaroni and cheese.”
Then there’s the fallout from the fight at Sullivan’s, with Cal being carted away by police after his anger management issues flared up after losing his job as a high school coach.
How will Maddie handle knowing this new side of Cal?
“It’s certainly something Cal needs to unpack and examine whether he handled past events properly, why he lost it when not losing it is so important to him, and what choices he can make going forward,” Sheryl told Entertainment Weekly. “Not only for himself but also for the people he cares about.”
On top of that, there’s the town’s recall election and the ongoing implication that Maddie should be the one to step up and replace the Mayor if he loses.
If it happens, it will enrage the Mayor’s vengeful wife even more, and it’s only a matter of time before she digs up more dirt on Maddie’s loved ones (especially considering how easily she caused trouble for Cal).
Finally, there’s Issac, who now knows who his biological parents are, but their reactions to his presence have been as disparate as chalk and cheese.
Bill, who appeared to be the most fertile man in Serenity, wanted nothing to do with his secret child, whom, to be fair, he had no idea existed until now.
Will he change his mind once the dust has settled? Or will he be alarmed by Issac’s close friendship with Noreen, the baby mama to the love child who ended his marriage to Maddie?
Is a Sweet Magnolias Season 3 Trailer Available?
Unfortunately, there is no confirmed release date, so we will have to wait a while for new footage. So we’ll be waiting a while since filming has only just begun.
But at the very least, we know it’s on its way!
Sweet Magnolias didn’t even get a trailer until two weeks before the show premiered in season two.
However, if you return, we’ll keep you as up-to-date as possible. Promise!
