When the late Wes Craven’s Scream initially hit theaters in 1996, moviegoers loved its unique blend of gore, humor, and meta-commentary, not to mention the introduction of Ghostface, who has become one of horror’s most legendary villains.
Scream 6, aka Scream VI, starring Jenna Ortega, was released earlier this year to critical and financial success, receiving a respectable 91% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes and $168.8 million at the box office.
Despite the fact that the authors, directors, and Ghostface have changed throughout the years, the momentum has continued, and a seventh installment is currently in the works. In this post, we’ll look at what we know so far regarding the release date and what we can expect from “Scream 7.” So far, here’s what we know.
When Will Scream 7 Be Released?
According to Collider, Scream 7 could be released sometime in 2024, however, the film is still in early development, and no release date has been announced, so those dates should be taken with a grain of salt.
The directors of Scream 6, Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, expressed a desire to continue the renowned franchise, however, it has since been reported that the next installment would be directed by Christopher Landon, of Freaky and Happy Death Day fame.

Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett will take a break to focus on an upcoming original horror film project for Universal. Still, the ongoing 2023 Writers and Actors Strike will have an impact on all of this, so we don’t expect much progress on Scream 7 in 2023.
Who Will Be in the Cast of Scream 7?
Nobody has confirmed it yet, but the new ‘core-four’ will be returning to the big screen, which means Melissa Barrera, Jenna Ortega, Mason Gooding, and Jasmin Savoy Brown.
Here’s the list of expected cast members in Scream 7:
- Melissa Barrera as Sam Carpenter
- Jenna Ortega as Tara Carpenter
- Mason Gooding as Chad Meeks-Martin
- Jasmin Savoy Brown as Mindy Meeks-Martin
- Courteney Cox as Gale Weathers
- Hayden Panettiere as Kirby Reed
- Roger Jackson as Ghostface
What Will Happen in Scream 7?
There is no official storyline outline yet, but we anticipate that Scream 7 will pick up where the previous film left off, with Sam embracing her father’s killing impulses.
Ghostface was revealed to have numerous killers at the end of the previous slasher film. Without giving anything away, let’s just say that no new movie villains are mentioned, and all loose ends are resolved. However, there is one pivotal scene that makes a sequel highly likely.
Sam is enamored with her father, Billy Loomis (also known as the original Ghostface), and his mask. We saw before how she put on the costume to trap Bailey and save herself. Sam, on the other hand, clearly enjoyed her time as a disguised murderer more than she should have.
While Sam did abandon the mask at the end of Scream 6, we’re quite sure her killer tendencies aren’t fully gone. And how great would it be to see a new Scream film deviate from the last girl slasher conventions by making Sam the next villain instead?

We want to see it happen, and for now, a Sam Ghostface film appears to be the only route ahead – unless we get an unexpected curveball and a brand-new cast.
Is There a Trailer for Scream 7?
Scream 7 does not yet have a trailer because it is still under development. If it’s on track for a 2024 release, we should see one soon.
