According to Deadline, a release date of November 2024 has been established for Ridley Scott’s Gladiator 2. The eagerly anticipated return of the acclaimed director’s vision to the arena has been anticipated for a very long time. After his breakthrough performance in Aftersun last year, actor Paul Mescal is scheduled to take the lead in the movie.
Mescal won’t take the place of Russell Crowe’s Maximus, but he will advance the plot as a new character in the same universe. He will play Lucius, the nephew of Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix), the son of Roman commander Marcus Aurelius, who murdered his father and ascended to the throne, and Lucilla (Connie Nielsen).

The tale is set some years after the events of the previous movie, and Lucius is now an adult. In the first movie, Maximus stabbed the emperor before vanishing into the afterlife to reunite with his murdered wife and son, but while exacting revenge on his own family, he saved Lucius and his mother Lucilla. The young Lucius was deeply affected by Maximus’ sacrifice, and the sequel will pick up where it left off.
Scott has been looking for the lead actor ever since the first draft of the movie was handed over in November of last year. Numerous actors, including Richard Madden, Timothée Chalamet, as well as Miles Teller from Maverick and Austin Butler from Elvis were reportedly considered, but Mescal ended up being the director’s first choice.

Resuming his role as director, Scott will lead the film from a script penned by David Scarpa. Costume designer Janty Yates and production designer Arthur Max, who both contributed to the first movie, are both coming back. Along with Michael Pruss, Scott Free President, Doug Wick, and Lucy Fisher of Red Wagon Entertainment, Scott also serves as the movie’s producer.

Gladiator Reviews
Ridley Scott’s Gladiator is not a perfect film, I would think that the hardiest of fans, of which I’m firmly one, know this deep down. Yet just like Commodus in the film is keen to point out that he himself has other virtues that are worthy, so does Gladiator in the film. Enough in fact to make it an everlasting favorite of genre fans and worthy of the Academy Award acknowledgments it received.

In narrative terms, the plot and the story arc are simplicity supreme, something Scott and Russell Crowe have never shied away from. There has to my knowledge as well, never been a denial of the debt Gladiator owes to Anthony Mann’s 1964 Epic, The Fall of the Roman Empire.
Some folk seem very irritated by this, which is strange because the makers of Gladiator were not standing up bold as brass to proclaim they were unique with their movie, what they did do was reinvigorate a stagnant genre of film for a new generational audience.
And it bloody worked, the influence and interest in all things Roman or historically swashbuckling of film that followed post-Gladiator’s success is there for all to see.
