Firebird is a passionate love tale set against the backdrop of an Air Force installation in occupied Estonia during the late 1970s Communist control, based on a true incident from the Cold War. Sergey (Tom Prior), a passionate young soldier who aspires to be a Moscow actor, is counting down the days until his military duty is completed. When he meets Roman (Oleg Zagorodnii), a sultry, enigmatic ace fighter pilot fresh to his base, his world is flipped upside down. Sergey and Roman traverse the delicate line between love and friendship, driven by their irresistible desire, at a period when Soviet men in military caught having a sexual affair faced the worst penalty.
In the face of an all-seeing Communist state, the guys risk their freedom and their lives to be together as their friendship blossoms into love. Standing up to a communist dictatorship that threatens prison term for homosexual behaviour requires a lot of guts. Nonetheless, during the Soviet occupation of Estonia in the 1970s, two air force personnel took the decision to put their lives on the line for love.
This is the basis of Peeter Rebane’s must-see Firebird, a film directed, co-written, and co-produced by him and based on the Russian writer Sergey Fetisov’s novel The Story Of Roman. On March 17, the film received its worldwide debut at the 35th BFI Flare: London LGBTQ+ Film Festival, and it will be released in UK theatres on April 16. Everything you need to know about this inspirational film is included here.
