Evil Dead, the cult-classic comedy-horror franchise, is returning from the dead with a new, bloody story. Evil Dead Rise, which was first announced in October 2019, is set to bring a new story from Sam Raimi’s influential franchise to the big screen.

With Raimi returning to produce and Lee Cronin (A Hole In The Ground) chosen to write and direct the new installment, fans of the original films can expect the same hilarious and strange horror that they’ve come to expect from the franchise.

But what is the plot of the new film? Will the story continue to follow the tough anti-hero, Ash Williams? If you dare to read on, we have all the answers to these questions and more.

Evil Dead Rise Release Date

Evil Dead Rise was originally scheduled to premiere on HBO Max in 2022, but thanks to a new strategy implemented by the studio and positive test screenings, the film will now be released in theatres on April 21, 2023.

House Party, Magic Mike’s Last Dance, and Blue Beetle were all supposed to premiere as HBO Max exclusives this year, so Evil Dead Rise isn’t the only movie coming this year that was originally supposed to premiere on HBO Max.

This is also a similar path to what Paramount took with last year’s horror hit Smile, which was originally planned as a Paramount+ original before positive test screenings convinced the studio to go with a theatrical release instead, a decision that paid off handsomely.

What is the Plotline of Evil Dead Rise?

According to Warner Bros., the official plot synopsis for Evil Dead Rise is as follows:

Moving the action out of the woods and into the city, “Evil Dead Rise” tells a twisted tale of two estranged sisters, played by Sutherland and Sullivan, whose reunion is cut short by the rise of flesh-possessing demons, thrusting them into a primal battle for survival as they face the most nightmarish version of family imaginable.

Cronin refers to the film sarcastically as a “heartwarming and tender family drama” on Twitter, alongside a photo of a blood-splattered countertop captioned “Damn kids never clean up the kitchen.”

This hint, combined with Cronin’s previous film dealing with evil children, makes one wonder which of the family members in LA will be possessed in Evil Dead Rise.

A reboot with a new storyline allows the franchise to be modernized while also incorporating new, terrifying ideas. With Lee Cronin writing and directing the latest installment, we can expect some of the dark creepiness seen in his debut film, A Hole In The Ground.

Cronin wrote and directed the film, which was released in 2019 to positive reviews.

The plot revolves around a mother whose son returns from the woods behind their house acting strangely. The woman begins to suspect that the boy is not her child, but rather a Changeling, a figure from European folklore who is said to be an entity left in place of a child stolen by fairies.

The film is shot in a desolate rural area, with mesmerizing images and a strange creepiness in the parental terror story. There is no comedy in the film, leaving one to wonder if the newer, possibly more terrifying Evil Dead film will have the same silly, comedic style as the original trilogy.

Who Will Be the New Cast Member in Evil Dead Rise?

Ellie’s mother, Alyssa Sutherland (Vikings), will be played by Alyssa Sutherland, and her sister Beth will be played by Lily Sullivan (Mental). In addition, Mia Challis (User Not Found) is listed to play a character named Jessica, while Morgan Davies, Gabrielle Echols, and Nell Fisher are listed to play unnamed characters.

Where Can You Watch the Earlier Films?

The first four Evil Dead films can be bought, rented, or streamed. Netflix and Starz also stream Ash vs. Evil Dead. Dark Horse Comics adapted the third film, Army of Darkness, in 1992.

After Dynamite Entertainment and Space Goat Productions took over the series, the writers put Ash in new, non-canon situations with Freddy Krueger, Dracula, and others. While not canon, the comics’ storyline is fun and should satisfy fans who can’t get enough of this demonic bloodbath.

The Evil Dead franchise’s gallons of blood and slapstick comedy made it a cult classic and horror fan favorite. Audiences can’t wait for its return. After 40 years, The Evil Dead’s fan base is likely to grow with this new, possibly darker installment.

We’ll keep an ear out for more news about the gruesome production, but we’ll avoid those strange creepy arms sticking out of it.
