Did he or did he not? Zac Efron, an alum of High School Musical, has looked unrecognizable in recent rare appearances — but did he ever get plastic surgery on his face? Some fans have speculated, but the actor has set the record straight in a new interview.
In a cover interview with Men’s Health published on Wednesday, September 7, Zac revealed that he badly injured his jaw after slipping and smacking his chin against the granite corner of a fountain in his house. As a result, the masseter muscles in his face, which he uses to chew, “just grew.” They just got really, really big,” making his jawline appear wider. Zac claimed he was unaware of the plastic surgery rumors until his mother called to inquire if he’d had any work done.

On September 13, the California native’s jaw appeared larger than usual as he stepped out for the premiere of The Greatest Beer Run Ever.
However, the Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil, and Vile actor sparked plastic surgery rumors when he appeared in Bill Nye’s “Earth Day Musical” special for Facebook Watch in April 2021, appearing to have an augmented jaw and lips. Fans took to Twitter immediately to speculate about Zac’s appearance.

“LMAO, looks like he got stung by a bee,” one user commented, adding that “Zac Efron was way too inspired by The Weeknd’s face shape.” Last year, the After Hours singer surprised fans by debuting a heavily augmented new face — which, instead of plastic surgery, turned out to be incredible prosthetics work for the “Save Your Tears” music video.
Many fans, however, were quick to defend the Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates star. One Twitter user reminded fans that Zac’s seemingly new face could be the result of a 2013 injury. “Do you remember when Zac Efron broke his jaw?” What became of leading with kindness? “Y’all forget so quickly,” the tweet said. Eight years ago, the A-lister slipped in a puddle at home and needed stitches for a gash.
Zac’s devoted fan base was not the only one to defend him. Kyle Sandilands, an Australian talk show host, claimed that “of course” the actor had no work.

“I’d know if he’d had any plastic surgery,” he said in an April 2021 episode of the podcast “The Kyle and Jackie O Show.” “It’s like buying a Picasso and letting your child’s finger paint all over it.” “What’s the point?”
In the past, the That Awkward Moment star has surprised his fans with his appearance. Fans were quick to comment on the actor’s huskier look for his role in Baywatch in 2020, forcing him to commit to a strict diet and exercise regimen.
“I realized after I finished that movie that I never want to be in that good of shape again,” Zac told Sean Evans on an episode of Hot Ones in April 2020. “Are you working with almost no wiggle room? You’re concerned about things like water under your skin, which is reducing your six-pack to a four-pack. S-t like that is simply not… it is simply stupid.”
