Kodo Nishimura is a Buddhist monk who was raised in a Buddhist temple by his priest father, Jodo shu. He has been studying ikebana, the art of arranging flowers, for years as a way to heal himself and hide his dark past.
(As I grew older, I felt that I was no longer “supposed” to do these things because I am biologically male. Children in my vicinity inquired, “Do you have any male friends?” and commented, “You run like a girl.”)
