Christian Bale has another film coming out this year, and it doesn’t include killing gods as he did in Thor: Love and Thunder. David O. Russell, director of American Hustle and Silver Linings Playbook, has unveiled the first trailer for his next picture, Amsterdam.
The teaser debuted online on Wednesday. Starring with Bale is an A-list cast, including Margot Robbie (Birds of Prey, Suicide Squad) and John David Washington (Tenet). The release date for the film is slated for the month of November.
In the 1930s setting of Amsterdam, Bale, Washington, and Robbie play best friends who must band together to clear Bale’s name after he is falsely convicted of murder. As they go, they encounter a cast of bizarre individuals and find themselves in the heart of a massive American plot.
Beyond the three leads, below is a quick list of performers who also had roles in the film:
- Timothy Olyphant
- Rami Malek
- Andrea Riseborough
- Taylor Swift
- Robert De Niro
- Zoe Saldana
- Michael Shannon
- Mike Myers
- Chris Rock
Writer-director David O. Russell returns with his first film since 2015’s Joy. A possible explanation for the break is that Russell is notoriously tough to work with, especially for female actors and actresses.
On the set of I Heart Huckabees in 2004, a video leaked of him hurling profanities at Lily Tomlin, and during the filming of American Hustle, he reportedly made Amy Adams weep (which led to Bale stepping in to defend her).
Russell’s transgender niece has accused him of improperly grabbing her, highlighting a pattern of problematic conduct in his personal life as well. An amicable resolution was reached to this issue.
The trailer for Amsterdam displays a few unexpected production credentials, including Drake and Adel “Future” Nur as executive producers.
When asked, “Who Is David O. Russell?” People Often Fail to Recognize Him
As we’ve discussed, Oscar-nominated writer/director David O. Russell was riding a fairly decent wave of success in the early to mid-2010s. However, he didn’t appear out of thin air. The ’90s marked the beginning of Russell’s film career.
Films such as Spanking the Monkey, The Fighter, Three Kings, I Heart Huckabees, Silver Linings Playbook, Flirting With Disaster, American Hustle, and Joy are just some of the features that Russell has directed. Additionally, he directed the film Accidental Love as Stephen Greene.
What Is the Plotline in Amsterdam?
Amsterdam is a period piece set in the early 20th century that follows the lives of Bale, Robbie, and Washington’s respective characters. The CinemaCon trailer said that the plot was inspired by true occurrences.

It’s about three friends who, in the 1930s, witness a murder, are questioned as suspects, and wind up uncovering one of the most outlandish conspiracies in American history.
The trailer for Amsterdam Has Just Been Released!
The first trailer was released by 20th Century Studios on July 6 and, holy cow, it looks amazing. Unfortunately, Taylor just makes a brief cameo in the billing block at the very end of the 2.5-minute piece. In the photograph, she can be seen sighing and seeming sad. She accessorizes her ’30s-inspired updo with a tiny fascinator and long emerald dangles.
Christian Bale, John David Washington, and Margot Robbie are shown in the opening scene of the teaser, with Chris Rock’s character entering the room and looking perplexed as to why they are standing over “a dead white man in a box.” The following sequences show how the three friends became friends, why they appear to be murder suspects, and how they work to expose the real culprit.
The first footage from the film was shown at the 2022 CinemaCon, where Disney executive Tony Chambers described it as a “unique romantic crime epic.”
It has been announced that Amsterdam will be released in theaters on November 4th, 2022.
