Hector Elton John is a gay British singer, composer, and pianist who goes by the moniker “Rocketman.”

Reginald Kenneth Dwight was the original name of Elton John. He was born in Pinner, Middlesex, England, on March 25, 1947. He was Sheila Eileen’s only kid and the older son of Stanley Dwight. Because of his eccentric attire and enormous specs, he was referred to as the “Queen Mum of Pop.”

At the age of 15, he began his career as a pianist. He was employed as a pianist at the Northwood Hills Hotel to perform on Thursday through Sunday nights. John and his friends started a group named “Bluesology” in 1962.

His debut single, “Scarecrow,” which had music by Elton John and lyrics by Bernie Taupin, was released in 1967.

John & Taupin started writing songs for Dick James’ DJM records in 1968. John’s debut album, “Empty Sky,” was a commercial flop in 1969. Following that, “Your Song” from his second album became a huge hit in both England and the United States. “Rocketman,” his first number-one hit, achieved this feat in 1972.

When Did Elton John Reveal His Homosexuality?

Prior to making his formal homosexuality known to Rolling Stone magazine in 1992, Elton John’s relationships weren’t always straightforward. Elton John’s first girlfriend was Linda Woodrow and he was set to get married in 1969, but two weeks before the wedding, Elton John called off the engagement. Someone Saved My Life Tonight, written by Elton and Bernie Taupin in 1975, is a song about the event. The “someone” in the title is likely to close friend Long John Baldry, who persuaded Elton to continue his music career rather than marry Linda with the help of pals.

The Rocketman film about the hero was released in 2019, and Linda, whose last name is now Hannon, said the following to Good Morning Britain: “We made the choice to wed. In Mill Hill, we went in search of a flat. For it, we purchased furnishings. “He and Bernie Taupin didn’t have any money, so I went to an antique shop and got myself an engagement ring. I had to sort of support them as a result. “It is true as the song says because his mother had ordered the wedding cake. At four in the morning, he did return and inform me that it was finished.”

Elton John had his first openly gay relationship with music manager John Reid in 1970. Five years later, their relationship—which is portrayed in the movie Rocketman—came to an end, but Reid remained Elton’s manager until 1988. Although this did not spell the end of Elton John’s straight love relationships, he did become a trailblazer soon after by coming out to the public about his sexual orientation. Elton John made his coming out as a bisexual public in Rolling Stone, where he was featured on the cover, in 1976.

The singer of Your Song openly stated during the interview: “Going to bed with a partner of the same sex is not wrong. Everyone is bisexual, in my opinion, to some extent. It’s not just me, in my opinion. Being that way is not horrible. I believe you to be bisexual. Everyone, I believe, is.” Elton discussed his then-held conviction that a romantic relationship with a woman would continue longer in the same interview, revealing that he still yearned for affection and attention.

When Elton John was finishing up his Too Low for Zero album in 1983, he ran upon German recording engineer Renate Blauel, and the two rapidly become close. Elton John proposed to Blauel after accompanying her on the Australian leg of his tour with the same name. On February 14th, 1984, the couple exchanged vows in St. Mark’s Church in Sydney, Australia’s Darling Point neighborhood. After a four-year marriage, the couple filed for divorce in 1988, and Blauel essentially disappeared from the public spotlight.

Elton John was to push even more limits after this marriage, telling Rolling Stone in 1992 that he was “very comfortable being gay.” The same year, the pianist established the Elton John AIDS Foundation to aid in the fight against the illness that had touched so many people in the neighborhood, including friends Ryan White and Freddie Mercury of Queen.

Since then, the Tiny Dancer singer has raised hundreds of millions of dollars for the cause by holding galas, balls, and his renowned annual Academy Award Party since 1993. He also uses his public platform to spread awareness of the illness and generate money for training and research.

Elton John has been happily married for a long time and now wants to assist many others in doing the same. He addressed his first marriage to Blauel while posting a photo of his spouse and themselves on their wedding day to Instagram in 2017. He urged Australians to support same-sex marriage at the time.

He wrote: “Many years ago, I chose Australia for my wedding to a wonderful woman for whom I have so much love and admiration. I wanted more than anything to be a good husband, but I denied who I really was, which caused my wife sadness, and caused me huge guilt and regret.”

He continued: “To be worthy of someone’s love, you have to be brave enough and clear-eyed enough, to be honest with yourself and your partner.”

Elton John Interview

In 2019, when asked in an interview with Variety what he’d say to any LGBTQ kids struggling right now, he responded: “Just be yourself. Don’t let anybody do you down.

“I’ve been very privileged, because I’m in a business that accepts gay people, although I came out pretty early… I’m very privileged. There are kids that aren’t privileged. They come from poor backgrounds. Their parents don’t understand. Religion gives them a hard time.”

He continued: “If you’re unhappy at home, leave. Leave. Don’t let anybody torture you for being gay or for your sexuality. Leave. Life is full of adventures. Always have hope in your heart, stay away from drugs and just try to be as true to yourself as possible”.

He declared: “It’s wonderful to be gay. I love being gay. I really do. I think I wouldn’t have had the life I’ve had if I hadn’t been gay. And I’m very proud of that. I’m very proud that I can appreciate that.

“I was never uncomfortable being gay. I didn’t know I was gay until I was 23, so I mean I got off to a very slow start […] and I made up for a lost time.

“Be proud of who you are. There are so many wonderfully diverse people in the world. Straight people, gay people, transgender people. We’re all God’s kids”.

Elton John’s journey to becoming an out gay man may be a long and complex one, but the legendary singer-songwriter has long been an icon and a beacon of hope for the LGBTQ community and will be for many years to come.
